The Effect of Revert Percentage on the Melt Quality and Mechanical Properties of Aluminum-SiC Composites D. Weiss Eck Industries, USA G. Gegal Caterpillar, Inc., USA P. Rohatgi University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, USA The melt processing steps of metal matrix composites includes alloy stirring, which has a detrimental effect on oxide levels. The addition of oxide rich scrap and the difficulty of effectively cleaning these alloys compound this problem. Most foundries control the problem by limiting the amount of revert used or use time consuming and expensive cleaning techniques that may effect reinforcement levels. This paper compares melts prepared with various levels of revert. Alloy microstructures and mechanical properties are compared for these melts and recommendations for optimum revert additions are made based on casting quality requirements. |
