Several melt treatments are performed in the modern foundry. These range from fluxing, degassing and filtration treatments aimed at reducing levels of undesirable inclusions and gas content, to additives aimed at improving product quality such as grain refiners, eutectic modifiers, primary Si refiners and additives to reduce die soldering. This paper summarizes the technology of these treatments and reviews current trends in usage. An emphasis is placed on recent developments in the usage and technology of grain refiners.
