Increased quality requirements for permanent mold aluminum casting have led to an increased use of molten metal filtration technology. Since the initial use of reticulated foam filters in military and aerospace casting, the use of ceramic foam filters have become increasingly popular and more widespread. Their use has moved through many sand casting applications and has begun to become a cost effective method of increasing the quality of casting produced in permanent mold applications. The identification and origin of aluminum inclusions is presented in detail. Metallographic analysis of spent filters and casting defects is presented in addition to LAIS testing and filter blockage and flow measurement of real world metal conditions utilizing varying filter fineness. Technical application of filtration technology and related gating design is also discussed in detail, including a case study of a greenfield application.
