FLOW SCIENCE, INC. - SOFTWARE FOR METAL CASTING APPLICATIONS. The quality of cast parts can be greatly improved using properly designed feeding and cooling systems. An inexpensive way to improve casting performance is through computer simulation. Filling patterns, solidification times and defects can all be predicted using Flow-3D®, the award-winning software from Flow Science, Inc. Flow-3D® is a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software package capable of simulating a wide variety of fluid flows. Flow-3D® contains many physical models specially designed for metal casting and is especially good at tracking and identifying regions of air entrapment and locations where early solidification may occur. With its unique defect tracking capability, it is possible for you to predict where structural defects arising from folds and oxide layers are likely to be located. Armed with this information, decisions can be made to re-orient a gate, change venting and cooling or alter the initial mold and/or pour temperatures. Flow-3D® differs from other casting modeling software in two principal ways. First, a special technique, Favor™, is used to define geometric regions within the grid of elements. This technique has the advantage that the geometry is independent of the grid, eliminating the tedious task of making the grid conform to the geometry. Even more important, because Favor™ uses fractional pieces of the rectangular elements, the orientations and areas of the mold or die surfaces are more accurately captured. Second, Flow-3D® uses special numerical methods to track the location of surfaces and to apply the proper dynamic boundary conditions at those surfaces. These methods, based on the Volume of Fluid technique developed by Flow-3D®‘s founder, allow for accurate representation of multiple surfaces that can coalesce or break apart in arbitrary ways.
